Welcome back! When my students in Battambang talk about going to the market, they often forget to tell me if they bought one thing or many things. Today, we are looking at how to turn a singular noun (one) into a plural noun (two or more) simply by adding -s or -es. Let's look at some things you see around town.
នៅពេលដែលសិស្សរបស់ខ្ញុំនិយាយអំពីការទៅផ្សារ ពួកគេតែងតែភ្លេចប្រាប់ខ្ញុំថាពួកគេបានទិញវត្ថុមួយ ឬច្រើន។ ថ្ងៃនេះ យើងនឹងសិក្សាពីរបៀបបំប្លែងនាមឯកវចនៈ (មួយ) ទៅជានាមពហុវចនៈ (ពីរ ឬច្រើន) ដោយគ្រាន់តែបន្ថែម -s ឬ -es ប៉ុណ្ណោះ។
warning Common English Mistake
In Khmer, we use numbers or quantity words but leave the noun exactly the same (e.g., "mango three" - ស្វាយបី). In English, if you have more than one, you must change the noun itself. Always remember to add the '-s' or '-es' to the end of the word!

Add -s
Tuk-Tuk → Tuk-Tuks
Rule: For most nouns, just add -s to make it plural.
ច្បាប់៖ សម្រាប់នាមភាគច្រើន គ្រាន់តែបន្ថែម -s ដើម្បីធ្វើឲ្យវាទៅជាពហុវចនៈ។
Example: There are many tuk-tuks waiting outside Phsar Nath.

Market → Markets
Rule: Just add -s.

Ends in -s: Add -es
Bus → Buses
Rule: If the word ends in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, or -z, add -es.
ច្បាប់៖ ប្រសិនបើពាក្យបញ្ចប់ដោយ -s, -sh, -ch, -x, ឬ -z សូមបន្ថែម -es។
Example: The night buses travel from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ រថយន្តក្រុងពេលយប់ធ្វើដំណើរពីសៀមរាបទៅភ្នំពេញ។
Ends in -ch: Add -es
Watch → Watches
Rule: Watch ends in -ch, so we add -es.
ច្បាប់៖ Watch បញ្ចប់ដោយ -ch ដូច្នេះយើងបន្ថែម -es។
Example: The vendors at the central market sell shiny watches.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ អ្នកលក់នៅផ្សារធំលក់នាឡិកាភ្លឺចាំង។
Ends in -x: Add -es
Box → Boxes
Rule: Box ends in -x, so we add -es.
ច្បាប់៖ Box បញ្ចប់ដោយ -x ដូច្នេះយើងបន្ថែម -es។
Example: Lisa packed the fresh fruit into three small boxes.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ លីសាបានវេចខ្ចប់ផ្លែឈើស្រស់ចូលទៅក្នុងប្រអប់តូចៗបី។
Ends in -o: Add -es
Mango → Mangoes
Rule: Many nouns ending in -o also take -es to become plural.
ច្បាប់៖ នាមជាច្រើនដែលបញ្ចប់ដោយ -o ក៏យក -es ដើម្បីក្លាយជាពហុវចនៈផងដែរ។
Example: Sophea bought five sweet yellow mangoes for dessert.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ សុភាបានទិញផ្លែស្វាយទុំពណ៌លឿងចំនួនប្រាំសម្រាប់បង្អែម។
