Welcome! When my students in Battambang are writing about their experiences, one of the first things they need to master is identifying what exactly they are talking about. A noun is a naming word. In English, we use nouns to identify People, Places, Things, Animals, and Ideas/Feelings. Let's look at some examples you might use every day.
នាមគឺជាពាក្យសម្រាប់ហៅឈ្មោះ។ យើងប្រើនាមដើម្បីកំណត់អត្តសញ្ញាណ មនុស្ស ទីកន្លែង វត្ថុ សត្វ និង គំនិត/អារម្មណ៍។
warning Common Mistake
In Khmer, the word order can be very flexible. In English, remember that nouns often come after an adjective (like "a beautiful temple", not "a temple beautiful").
នៅក្នុងភាសាខ្មែរ លំដាប់ពាក្យអាចបត់បែនបាន។ នៅក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស ចងចាំថានាមតែងតែមកបន្ទាប់ពីគុណនាម (ដូចជា "ប្រាសាទដ៏ស្រស់ស្អាត" មិនមែន "ប្រាសាទ ស្រស់ស្អាត" ទេ)។

A person who shows others the way, especially tourists.

Temple
A building devoted to religious worship.
ប្រាសាទ / វត្ត - អគារដែលឧទ្ទិសដល់ការគោរពសក្ការៈបូជា។
Example: The group woke up early to visit the ancient Banan Temple.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ក្រុមនេះបានក្រោកពីព្រលឹមដើម្បីទៅទស្សនាប្រាសាទបាណន់។
Animal
Bird
A creature with feathers and wings, usually able to fly.
សត្វស្លាប - សត្វមានរោម និងស្លាប។
Example: Saram took a beautiful photo of the rare Giant Ibis in the sanctuary.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ សារ៉ាំ បានថតរូបដ៏ស្រស់ស្អាតនៃសត្វត្រយងយក្សដ៏កម្រនៅក្នុងជម្រករបស់វា។
Thing
Train
A series of connected vehicles traveling on railways.
រថភ្លើង - យានជំនិះភ្ជាប់គ្នាជាបន្តបន្ទាប់។
Example: Riding the Bamboo Train is a popular activity for tourists.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ការជិះរថភ្លើងឫស្សីគឺជាសកម្មភាពដ៏ពេញនិយមសម្រាប់អ្នកទេសចរ។
Idea/Feeling
Love
A strong feeling of affection. This is an abstract noun.
ក្តីស្រឡាញ់ - អារម្មណ៍ស្រឡាញ់ខ្លាំង។ នេះជានាមអរូបិយ។
Example: My love for Cambodian street food grows every time I visit the market.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ក្តីស្រឡាញ់របស់ខ្ញុំចំពោះម្ហូបតាមផ្លូវរបស់កម្ពុជាកើនឡើងរាល់ពេលដែលខ្ញុំទៅផ្សារ។
Idea/Feeling
Time
The continued progress of existence and events.
ពេលវេលា - ដំណើរការបន្តនៃអត្ថិភាព។
Example: We spent a lot of time learning about the history of the statues.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ពួកយើងចំណាយពេលច្រើនរៀនអំពីប្រវត្តិរូបចម្លាក់។
