Reported Speech B2
🗣️

Reporting Actions

ការរាយការណ៍ពីបញ្ជា សំណើ និងដំបូន្មាន

We don't use typical reported speech rules (shifting tenses back) for commands or requests.

Instead, we use:
Verb + Object + (not) to + Infinitive

ចំពោះការរាយការណ៍ពីការស្នើសុំ ឬការបញ្ជា យើងមិនប្តូរកាល (Tense) ដូចធម្មតាទេ តែយើងប្រើទម្រង់ "to + កិរិយាសព្ទដើម" វិញ។
👮

Commands 👮

ការបញ្ជា (tell, order, command)
"Sit down!" the teacher said.
The teacher told us to sit down.
គ្រូបានប្រាប់(បញ្ជា)ពួកយើងឱ្យអង្គុយចុះ។
"Stop the car!" the police said.
The police ordered him to stop the car.
ប៉ូលីសបានបញ្ជាឱ្យគាត់បញ្ឈប់ឡាន។
🙏

Requests 🙏

ការស្នើសុំ (ask, beg, request)
"Please open the window."
She asked me to open the window.
នាងបានសុំឱ្យខ្ញុំបើកបង្អួច។
"Can you help me, please?"
He begged us to help him.
គាត់បានអង្វរឱ្យពួកយើងជួយគាត់។
💡

Advice & Warnings 💡

ការផ្តល់ដំបូន្មាន និងការព្រមាន (advise, warn)
"You should study more."
He advised me to study more.
គាត់បានណែនាំខ្ញុំឱ្យរៀនបន្ថែមទៀត។
"Be careful with that dog."
She warned us to be careful.
នាងបានព្រមានពួកយើងឱ្យប្រយ័ត្ន។
🚫

Negative Commands 🚫

ការហាមឃាត់ (ប្រើ "not to")
"Don't touch the wet paint!"
He told me not to touch it.
គាត់បានប្រាប់ខ្ញុំមិនឱ្យប៉ះវាទេ។
"Please don't be late."
She asked us not to be late.
នាងបានសុំពួកយើងកុំឱ្យមកយឺត។
The "Suggest" Trap!

Do not use "suggest + object + to infinitive". This is a common B2 error!

(ប្រយ័ត្ន! ពាក្យ "suggest" មិនអាចប្រើទម្រង់ "suggest somebody to do something" បានទេ!)
He suggested me to see a doctor. ❌

He suggested seeing a doctor. ✅
(suggest + V-ing)

He suggested that I see a doctor. ✅
(suggest + that clause)
The "Say" Trap!

We do not use "say" + object + to infinitive for commands.

(កុំប្រើ "say" សម្រាប់ការរាយការណ៍ពីបញ្ជា ត្រូវប្រើ "tell"!)
He said me to leave. ❌
He told me to leave. ✅

She asked me ___ the window.
(នាងបានសុំឱ្យខ្ញុំបើកបង្អួច។)
Negative Command

"Don't be late!" he said to us.

He told us ___ late.
(គាត់បានប្រាប់ពួកយើងមិនឱ្យមកយឺតទេ។)
GRAMMAR TRAP! ❌
He suggested ___ a doctor.
(គាត់បានណែនាំឱ្យទៅជួបពេទ្យ។)
Advice vs Order

"You should rest," the doctor said to me.

The doctor ___ me to rest.
(គ្រូពេទ្យបានណែនាំខ្ញុំឱ្យសម្រាក។)

Reporting Orders

Watch & Learn: Pay attention to how Teacher Sopheak drops the "Please" when changing a direct request into a reported request. The reporting verb "asked" or "begged" already shows it was a request!

Teacher, if I use "suggest", why can't I use the "to + infinitive" structure? It sounds correct to me!

Excellent B2 question, Sovan! It might *sound* correct, but it is grammatically wrong in English. The verb "suggest" is very strict. It must be followed by a gerund (-ing) OR a "that" clause. Example: "She suggested going" OR "She suggested that we go." Never "She suggested us to go." 📝

What if there is no object? Like, "The commander ordered to shoot." Is that okay?

Another great question. For verbs like 'tell', 'order', and 'ask' (when used as a command), you generally MUST have an object. You need to say who is receiving the order. "The commander ordered **his soldiers** to shoot." 🎯

What is the exact difference between 'tell' and 'ask' in reported speech?

"Ask" is used for requests (when someone says "please"). "Tell" is used for commands or instructions (when someone just tells you what to do without asking nicely). Example: "Please sit" -> She asked me to sit. "Sit down!" -> She told me to sit. 🪑
