Lesson 2: Reported Questions
🗣️

Reported Questions

ការរាយការណ៍អំពីសំណួររបស់អ្នកដទៃ

When we report a question, we change the tense backwards and we do not use a question mark. The word order changes to a normal sentence.

នៅពេលយើងយកសំណួររបស់អ្នកដទៃមកនិយាយប្រាប់គេបន្ត យើងត្រូវប្តូរកាលទៅអតីតកាល ហើយយើងមិនប្រើសញ្ញាសួរ (?) ទេ។ ការរៀបចំជួរពាក្យត្រូវប្តូរទៅជាប្រយោគស្របធម្មតាវិញ។

Wh- Questions ❓

សំណួរដែលផ្តើមដោយ Wh- (What, Where, Why, When)
Direct: What is your name? Reported: She asked what my name was. នាងបានសួរថាខ្ញុំឈ្មោះអ្វី។
Direct: Where are you going? Reported: He asked where I was going. គាត់បានសួរថាខ្ញុំកំពុងទៅណា។
Direct: Why did you leave? Reported: They asked why I had left. ពួកគេបានសួរថាហេតុអ្វីបានជាខ្ញុំចាកចេញ។
Direct: When will the train arrive? Reported: I asked when the train would arrive. ខ្ញុំបានសួរថាតើរថភ្លើងនឹងមកដល់នៅពេលណា។
✔️

Yes/No Questions ✔️

សំណួរដែលត្រូវការចម្លើយ បាទ/ចាស ឬ ទេ (ត្រូវបន្ថែម If ឬ Whether)
Direct: Do you like coffee? Reported: He asked if I liked coffee. គាត់បានសួរថា តើខ្ញុំចូលចិត្តកាហ្វេឬអត់។
Direct: Have you seen my keys? Reported: She asked whether I had seen her keys. នាងបានសួរថា តើខ្ញុំបានឃើញសោរបស់នាងឬអត់។
Direct: Are they coming to the party? Reported: I asked if they were coming to the party. ខ្ញុំបានសួរថា តើពួកគេនឹងមកចូលរួមពិធីជប់លៀងឬអត់។
Direct: Can you help me? Reported: He asked if I could help him. គាត់បានសួរថា តើខ្ញុំអាចជួយគាត់បានឬអត់។

Time and Place Changes ⏳

ការផ្លាស់ប្តូរពេលវេលា និងទីកន្លែង
Direct: Are you working today? Reported: He asked if I was working that day. ថ្ងៃនេះ ទៅជា ថ្ងៃនោះ
Direct: Will you go tomorrow? Reported: She asked if I would go the next day. ថ្ងៃស្អែក ទៅជា ថ្ងៃបន្ទាប់
Direct: Can I sit here? Reported: He asked if he could sit there. ទីនេះ ទៅជា ទីនោះ
The Word Order Trap!

Do not keep the question word order! Drop do/does/did and put the subject before the verb.

(កុំរក្សាទម្រង់ជួរពាក្យជាសំណួរ! ត្រូវដកពាក្យ do/does/did ចេញ ហើយដាក់ប្រធាននៅពីមុខកិរិយាស័ព្ទវិញ។)
"He asked me where did I live."
ខុស! (Wrong word order) ❌
"He asked me where I lived."
ត្រឹមត្រូវ! (Correct subject + verb order) ✅

Quick Check ⚡

ការត្រួតពិនិត្យរហ័ស
Direct to Reported
Direct: "Where is the station?"

Yes/No Questions
Direct: "Are you tired?"
Reported: He asked ___ I was tired.
(គាត់បានសួរថា តើខ្ញុំហត់ឬអត់។)
LITERAL TRAP! ❌
Direct: "Did you eat?"
Which reported version is correct?
(តើប្រយោគរាយការណ៍មួយណាដែលត្រឹមត្រូវ?)
Time Change
Direct: "Can we meet tomorrow?"
Reported: They asked if we could meet ___.
(ពួកគេបានសួរថាតើយើងអាចជួបគ្នានៅថ្ងៃបន្ទាប់បានឬអត់។)
Direct to Reported
Direct: "Why are you laughing?"
Reported: The teacher asked why ___.
(គ្រូបានសួរថាហេតុអ្វីបានជាខ្ញុំកំពុងសើច។)

They both mean the exact same thing in reported questions! "If" is more common in spoken English, and "whether" sounds a bit more formal for writing. ✍️

If someone asks "Where is the bathroom?", how do I report it?

You would say: "He asked where the bathroom was." Remember to move the verb "was" to the end! 🚻

Do we always have to change the tense to the past?

Usually yes, because we are reporting something that happened in the past ("She asked..."). However, if the information is still currently true, you don't always have to change it. But backshifting is the safest rule for B2 level! 📚
