✨ Lesson 7: Possessive Pronouns vs. Possessive Adjectives

We have already learned about Possessive Adjectives1 (my, your, his, her, etc.). Remember, they always come before a noun. For example: "This is my book."

Today, we will learn about their close relatives: Possessive Pronouns2. These pronouns also show ownership, but they are different because they replace3 the noun and stand alone4.

The Big Comparison

This table shows how the two types are related. This is very important!

Possessive Adjective (+ Noun)Possessive Pronoun (Stands Alone)
This is my book. This book is mine.
Is that your moto?Is that moto yours?
That is his farm. That farm is his.
I like her dress. That dress is hers.
This is our house. This house is ours.
That is their boat. That boat is theirs.

Note: 'his' is the same in both columns. Also, the pronoun 'it' does not have a common possessive pronoun form.

Why Use Possessive Pronouns?

We use possessive pronouns to avoid repetition5 and sound more natural.

  • Repetitive: This is my coffee, not your coffee.
  • Natural: This is my coffee, not yours.
  • Repetitive: Her bag is new, but my bag is old.
  • Natural: Her bag is new, but mine is old.

Answering "Whose...?"

Possessive pronouns are the perfect way to answer questions that start with "Whose...?"

Person A: Whose keys are these on the table?

Person B: They are mine. Thank you!

Person A: And is this black hat yours too?

Person B: No, that isn't mine. I think it's his. (pointing to another man)
