Reported Modals

When we report speech, modal verbs take a step back in time (backshifting)!

Some modals are already in the past form, so they stay the same! (would, could, should, might).

"You should rest." ➔ The doctor said I should rest.
warning The "Must" Trap!

Why does "must" change?

("Must" ផ្លាស់ប្តូរទៅជា "had to" ដោយសារតែ "must" មិនមានទម្រង់អតីតកាលផ្ទាល់ខ្លួនទេ!)
He said he musted go. close
(There is no past tense of 'must'!)
He said he had to go. check
(Correct. We borrow 'had to' for the past.)

Teacher, why does "must" change to "had to"? That seems strange!

Hi Serey! Good question. It's because "must" doesn't have a past tense form in English! When we need to talk about obligation in the past, we are forced to borrow "had to" from "have to". That carries over into reported speech! 🔄

If the original quote is "I could swim", what is the reported speech?

Hi Vireak! Because "could" is already the past form of "can", it doesn't change. So, the reported speech is just: He said he could swim. Simple! 💡
