Lesson 3: Past Continuous vs. Past Simple
Welcome to B1 Grammar! As my students and I discuss our experiences, we often need to tell stories about things that happened unexpectedly. To do this correctly, we must combine two different verb tenses. We use the Past Continuous for the long background action, and the Past Simple for the sudden event that interrupts it. Let's look at exactly how to construct these sentences. Grammar Examples: Was walking / Saw - Setting the scene, interrupted by noticing something. (I was walking when I saw my friend.) Were eating / Started - An ongoing group action interrupted by a new situation. (We were eating when it started to rain.) Were driving / Broke down - A travel action stopped by a mechanical issue. (We were driving when the tuk-tuk broke down.) Was taking / Stole - A focused activity interrupted by an unexpected action. (He was taking a photo when the monkey stole it.)
