Lesson 2: Present Perfect vs. Past Simple

Welcome to B1 Grammar! Here in Siem Reap, I often hear guides and hotel staff sharing their stories with guests. Sometimes they say, "I lived here for 5 years," when they actually mean, "I have lived here for 5 years."

Knowing when an action is completely finished (Past Simple) and when it continues or affects the present (Present Perfect) changes your whole story. Today we will master the difference.

warning Common Mistake

Never use specific, finished time words (like yesterday, last year, in 2019) with the Present Perfect.

Wrong: I have seen Angkor Wat yesterday.
Right: I saw Angkor Wat yesterday.

Comparing the Tenses

Present Perfect

Have visited

Used to talk about a life experience. The exact time is not important.

Example: I have visited the Bayon temple many times.

Past Simple

Visited

Used for an action that started and finished in the past at a known time.

Example: Our guests visited the Bayon temple yesterday morning.

Present Perfect

Since / For

Keywords used to show an action started in the past and continues today.

Example: Sophea has worked at this hotel since 2018. (She still works here).

Past Simple

In 2018 / Ago

Keywords that point to a completely finished block of time.

Example: Sophea started her tourism business in 2018.

Present Perfect

Have you ever...?

A question asking if an experience has happened at *any* time in someone's life.

Example: Have you ever eaten authentic fish amok?

Past Simple

When did you...?

A question asking for the specific details or time of a finished event.

Example: When did you eat at that restaurant?
