When my upper-intermediate students in Battambang want to sound more like native speakers, they stop using basic, literal words and start using phrasal verbs, metaphors, and idioms. These expressions add color and personality to your English. They are especially useful when writing professional travel blogs, giving tours, or chatting casually with expats.

warning Professional Tip
Never translate idioms word-for-word into Khmer. For example, "break the ice" has absolutely nothing to do with frozen water! You must learn the hidden, cultural meaning behind the phrase rather than the literal translation.
កុំបកប្រែសំនួនវោហារមួយពាក្យម្តងៗទៅជាភាសាខ្មែរឲ្យសោះ។ ឧទាហរណ៍៖ "break the ice" មិនមានន័យថា "បំបែកទឹកកក" នោះទេ! អ្នកត្រូវតែរៀនពីអត្ថន័យលាក់កំបាំងរបស់វា។

To absorb or completely experience a good atmosphere, culture, or environment.
ស្រូបយក (អារម្មណ៍ / បរិយាកាស / វប្បធម៌) យ៉ាងពេញលេញ។
Example: We sat at a quiet cafe by the river to soak up the relaxing atmosphere of Kampot.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ពួកយើងអង្គុយនៅហាងកាហ្វេស្ងាត់មួយក្បែរមាត់ទន្លេ ដើម្បីស្រូបយកបរិយាកាសដ៏លំហែរនៃទីរួមខេត្តកំពត។

To improve your knowledge, skill, or memory of something you used to know.
រំលឹកឡើងវិញនូវចំណេះដឹង ឬជំនាញដែលធ្លាប់ចេះ។
Example: The tour guide needed to brush up on his French history before the group arrived.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ មគ្គុទ្ទេសក៍ទេសចរណ៍ចាំបាច់ត្រូវរំលឹកប្រវត្តិសាស្រ្តបារាំងរបស់គាត់ឡើងវិញ មុនពេលក្រុមភ្ញៀវមកដល់។

Off the beaten track
Located in a remote area; away from the places where tourists usually go.
កន្លែងដាច់ស្រយាល ឬកន្លែងដែលមិនសូវមានភ្ញៀវទេសចរទៅដល់។
Example: Koh Ker is an incredible temple, but it is a little off the beaten track.

Idiom
Break the ice
To do or say something that relieves tension and makes people feel relaxed when they first meet.
ធ្វើ ឬនិយាយអ្វីមួយដើម្បីបំបាត់ភាពតានតឹង ឬភាពអៀនខ្មាស នៅពេលជួបគ្នាដំបូង។
Example: The guide told a funny story about a local monkey to break the ice with the new guests.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ មគ្គុទ្ទេសក៍បាននិទានរឿងកំប្លែងអំពីសត្វស្វាក្នុងស្រុក ដើម្បីបំបាត់ភាពអៀនខ្មាសជាមួយភ្ញៀវថ្មី។
A hidden gem
Something that is outstanding or excellent, but is not widely known to the general public.
វត្ថុ ឬទីកន្លែងដ៏អស្ចារ្យ ប៉ុន្តែមិនសូវមានអ្នកស្គាល់ច្រើន។
Example: That small noodle soup stall near Phsar Nath is a true hidden gem.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ តូបលក់គុយទាវតូចមួយនៅក្បែរផ្សារណាត់នោះ គឺជាកន្លែងដ៏អស្ចារ្យដែលគេមិនសូវដឹង។
A melting pot
A place where many different people and cultures mix together successfully.
ទីកន្លែងដែលមានមនុស្សជាតិសាសន៍ និងវប្បធម៌ផ្សេងៗគ្នារស់នៅ និងរួមបញ្ចូលគ្នា។
Example: Phnom Penh is a melting pot of traditional Khmer culture and modern international influences.
