Welcome to B2 Vocabulary! I am Teacher Sopheak. When I listen to my upper-intermediate students, they often use perfect grammar but still sound a little unnatural. Why?

The answer is Collocations. These are words that naturally belong together in English. You cannot just use any synonym. Today, I will show you how to choose the exact right words so you sound like a highly fluent speaker.

សូមស្វាគមន៍មកកាន់វាក្យសព្ទកម្រិត B2! ខ្ញុំគឺអ្នកគ្រូ សុភ័ក្ត... (ខ្ញុំគឺជាលោកគ្រូ សុភ័ក្ត)។ នៅពេលខ្ញុំស្តាប់សិស្សកម្រិតខ្ពស់របស់ខ្ញុំ ពួកគេច្រើនតែប្រើវេយ្យាករណ៍ត្រឹមត្រូវ ប៉ុន្តែនៅតែស្តាប់ទៅមិនសូវធម្មជាតិ។ ហេតុអ្វី? នោះគឺដោយសារតែ Collocations! វាគឺជាពាក្យដែលតែងតែប្រើរួមគ្នាជាប្រចាំក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស។

Essential Collocations

Adjective + Noun

Heavy rain /ˈhɛvi reɪn/ ភ្លៀងខ្លាំង

បរិមាណទឹកភ្លៀងធ្លាក់យ៉ាងខ្លាំង។ (យើងមិនប្រើពាក្យ strong ជាមួយ rain ទេ)។

Example: During the monsoon season in Cambodia, we often experience heavy rain in the afternoon.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ក្នុងរដូវវស្សានៅកម្ពុជា យើងតែងតែជួបប្រទះភ្លៀងខ្លាំងនៅពេលរសៀល។

Verb + Noun

Make a decision /meɪk ə dɪˈsɪʒən/ ធ្វើការសម្រេចចិត្ត

ជ្រើសរើសអ្វីដែលត្រូវធ្វើបន្ទាប់ពីគិតយ៉ាងយកចិត្តទុកដាក់។ (យើងមិនប្រើពាក្យ do ទេ)។

Example: The manager needs to make a decision about the new tour package by tomorrow.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ អ្នកគ្រប់គ្រងត្រូវធ្វើការសម្រេចចិត្តអំពីកញ្ចប់ទេសចរណ៍ថ្មីនៅថ្ងៃស្អែក។

Adverb + Adjective

Bitterly cold /ˈbɪtərli koʊld/ ត្រជាក់ខ្លាំងណាស់ / រងាខ្លាំង

ត្រជាក់ខ្លាំងរហូតដល់ពិបាកទ្រាំ។

Example: It is rarely bitterly cold in Phnom Penh, even in December.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ នៅទីក្រុងភ្នំពេញកម្រនឹងត្រជាក់ខ្លាំងណាស់ សូម្បីតែនៅក្នុងខែធ្នូក៏ដោយ។

Adverb + Adjective

Fully aware /ˈfʊli əˈwɛr/ ដឹងច្បាស់ / យល់ច្បាស់

ដឹង ឬយល់ពីស្ថានភាពណាមួយទាំងស្រុង។

Example: Our professional tour guides are fully aware of the safety protocols.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ មគ្គុទ្ទេសក៍ទេសចរណ៍អាជីពរបស់យើងដឹងច្បាស់ពីវិធានការសុវត្ថិភាព។
