Lesson 1: Connotation, Denotation & Euphemisms
Welcome to B2 Upper-Intermediate Vocabulary! Today we are looking at the hidden feelings inside English words. Knowing a word's dictionary definition (its denotation ) is not enough. You must also understand its emotional feeling (its connotation ). For instance, 'cheap' and 'affordable' mean the same thing regarding price, but 'cheap' implies poor quality. We will also explore euphemisms —polite ways to discuss difficult topics in professional settings. Vocabulary List: Denotation (Noun) - The literal or primary meaning of a word, in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the word suggests. Connotation (Noun) - An idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning. Euphemism (Noun) - A mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.
