Verb "To Be"

កិរិយាសព្ទ To Be (Am, Is, Are)

This is the most important verb in English. It describes identity, location, or feelings.

វាគឺជាកិរិយាសព្ទដែលសំខាន់បំផុតក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស។ ក្នុងភាសាខ្មែរវាប្រែថា គឺ / នៅ / ជា។

For "I" am I am a student. (ខ្ញុំគឺជាសិស្ស។)

For "He / She / It" is He is my brother. (គាត់គឺជាបងប្រុសរបស់ខ្ញុំ។)

For "You / We / They" are They are happy. (ពួកគេគឺសប្បាយចិត្ត។)

Rule: Swap (ប្តូរទីតាំង) the Subject and the Verb.

ទម្រង់កាត់ (ប្រើពេលនិយាយ)

In spoken English, we usually combine the subject and the verb.

I am ➔ I'm I'm a teacher. (ខ្ញុំគឺជាគ្រូបង្រៀន។)

He is ➔ He's He's tall. (គាត់ខ្ពស់។)

They are not ➔ They aren't They aren't here. (ពួកគេមិននៅទីនេះទេ។)

The Missing Verb Trap!

Adjectives need "To Be"!

(ក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស អ្នកមិនអាចដាក់គុណនាមជាប់ជាមួយប្រធានដោយគ្មានកិរិយាសព្ទ To Be ដូចភាសាខ្មែរបានទេ!)

No! "I" is very special and ALWAYS takes "am". So it is always "I am" or "I'm". 🙅‍♂️

Not in the Simple Present! You say "I run", NOT "I am run". We only mix them when we use the "-ing" form (I am running), but we will learn that in the next lesson! 🏃‍♂️
