Lesson 42: Irony Detect

🎭 Tone Lab
Sarcasm

Irony & Sarcasm

Understanding tone when people say the opposite of what they mean.

Lesson Goal: Learn to spot sarcasm and irony by looking at the context clues in reviews, messages, and social media.

Reading Between the Lines

In English, people don't always mean what they say. Sometimes, if they are angry or frustrated, they will use positive words to describe a negative situation. This is called Sarcasm.

How do you know if someone is being literal or sarcastic? You have to look at the context clues. If someone gives a restaurant a 1-Star rating, but calls the food "perfect," you know they are being sarcastic because a 1-Star rating means they hated it.
