Lesson 19: News Summary

DAILY BRIEF
News Lab
Lesson Goal: Learn how to read news headlines and scan articles for important facts like Who, What, When, and Where.

Understanding the News

When you read a newspaper or a news website, you shouldn't read every single article from start to finish. Instead, you read the Headlines first. A headline is the large text at the top of the article that tells you the main idea.

If the headline is interesting or important, you can read the first paragraph. In journalism, the first paragraph is called the Lead. It usually answers the most important questions: Who is involved? What happened? When did it happen? Where did it happen?

If you only need a specific fact (like "How many people were evacuated?"), you don't need to read the whole article. You use scanning to jump through the text and look for numbers and keywords.
