Navigating the Library
Whether you are studying at a university or looking for a good novel at the city library, you will need to use a digital catalog. A catalog is a database that lists every single book, map, and document the library owns.
When you search for a topic, the computer will give you a table of results. You don't need to read every row perfectly! Instead, you should practice scanning for two important things. First, look at the Status. Is the book available, or has someone already checked it out? Some books are marked as reference, which means you can read them inside the library, but you cannot take them home.
Second, if the book is available, you need to scan for the Call Number. This is a special code (like "520.1 HAW") that tells you exactly which floor, aisle, and shelf the book lives on.
Review the vocabulary in the next tab, then test your scanning skills in the Practice tab!
