Hi Serey! Great observation! It looks weird, but it is 100% correct! The first "had" is the helping verb for the Past Perfect formula. The second "had" is the V3 (past participle) of the main verb "have" (to eat/consume). So "I had had lunch" just means "I had eaten lunch"! 🍔⏳
Do I always need to write two clauses in the same sentence to use the Past Perfect?
Excellent question. You don't always need them in the *exact same sentence*, but the context must be clear. For example: "I arrived at the station at 8:00 PM. But I was too late. The train had already left." The first sentence sets the past time, and the next sentence uses Past Perfect to show what happened *before* that time! 🕰️
Teacher, I saw a sentence that said "I had had lunch." Is "had had" a mistake? It looks so weird!
