The State (ស៊ាំហើយ / ជារឿងធម្មតា)

It is not new or strange anymore.

I am used to the heat in Cambodia.

ខ្ញុំស៊ាំនឹងអាកាសធាតុក្តៅនៅស្រុកខ្មែរហើយ។ (noun)

She is used to waking up early.

នាងស៊ាំនឹងការក្រោកពីព្រលឹម។ (verb-ing)

Becoming familiar with something new.

I am getting used to my new job.

ខ្ញុំកំពុងតែចាប់ផ្តើមស៊ាំនឹងការងារថ្មីរបស់ខ្ញុំ។ (noun)

He got used to driving in Phnom Penh.

គាត់បានស៊ាំនឹងការបើកបរនៅភ្នំពេញបាត់ទៅហើយ។ (verb-ing, Past)

The Infinitive Trap! ⚠️

Do not use the base verb here!

(កុំច្រឡំជាមួយទម្រង់ "used to + base verb" ដែលប្រែថា "ធ្លាប់" ក្នុងអតីតកាល។ ទីនេះ "to" គឺជា Preposition ដូច្នេះត្រូវប្រើ -ing!)

I am used to live here. ❌

Teacher, why do we use "-ing" after "to"? Isn't "to" usually followed by a base verb?

Excellent question, Socheata! Normally, yes (e.g., I want to go). But in the phrase "be used to", the word "to" is a preposition, not an infinitive marker. And prepositions must always be followed by a noun or a Gerund (-ing verb)! 🌟
