The Magic Drum

Khmer Folktale Reading Practice (B1/B2)
Lesson Goal: Practice reading comprehension and identify the moral structure of a traditional folktale.
Chapter 1: The Gift

Once upon a time, there lived a poor but honest farmer. Although he had little, he was always generous with his harvest, sharing his rice with those who had none.

One day, a powerful forest spirit, impressed by the farmer's kindness, appeared to him holding an old, dusty drum. "Take this," the spirit whispered. "Beat it gently when you are in need, and it will bring you prosperity."

That evening, the hungry farmer tapped the drum softly. Tum-tum-tum. Suddenly, a table appeared, covered with steaming rice, grilled fish, and fresh fruits. The farmer ate happily, grateful for the magic gift.

Chapter 2: The Theft

News of the magic drum spread quickly. A rich neighbor, who was known for his greed, became terribly envious. "Why should that poor fool have such a treasure?" he grumbled.

Late one night, the rich man snuck into the farmer's hut and stole the drum. He ran home, locking his doors. "Now I will have a feast fit for a king!" he shouted. Instead of tapping it gently, he beat the drum violently with a heavy stick. BANG! BANG! BANG!

He expected gold and food. But instead, a loud buzzing sound filled the room. A huge swarm of angry red ants and bees flew out of the drum! They chased the greedy man out of his house and into the river. He learned that magic only rewards those with a pure heart.
