"Used To"

ទម្លាប់ក្នុងអតីតកាល

We use "used to" for past habits or situations that are NOT true anymore.

យើងប្រើ "used to" ដើម្បីនិយាយពីទម្លាប់ ឬស្ថានភាពក្នុងអតីតកាល ដែលលែងពិត ឬលែងកើតមាននាពេលបច្ចុប្បន្ន។

ទម្រង់ស្រប (used to + base verb)

I used to play games.

ខ្ញុំធ្លាប់លេងហ្គេម (តែឥឡូវលែងលេងហើយ)។

She used to have long hair.

នាងធ្លាប់មានសក់វែង (តែឥឡូវកាត់ខ្លីហើយ)។

ទម្រង់បដិសេធ (didn't use to)

I didn't use to like coffee.

ខ្ញុំមិនធ្លាប់ចូលចិត្តកាហ្វេទេ (តែឥឡូវចូលចិត្ត)។

We didn't use to travel.

ពួកយើងមិនសូវធ្លាប់ដើរលេងទេ (តែឥឡូវដើរលេងច្រើន)។

The Spelling Trap!

Do NOT use "used" with "didn't" or "did"!

(ប្រយ័ត្ន! ក្នុងទម្រង់បដិសេធ និងសំណួរ កាលណាយើងប្រើ "did" រួចហើយ ពាក្យ use ត្រូវតែត្រលប់មកទម្រង់ដើម គឺគ្មានអក្សរ d ទេ!)

Hi Vathana! No, we cannot. "Used to" is ONLY for the past. For a present habit, simply use the Present Simple: "I wake up early everyday." ✨

What is the difference between "I used to play" and "I am used to playing"? They look the same!

That's a tricky one! "I used to play" = I played in the past, but not now. "I am used to playing" = Playing is normal or comfortable for me now. We will study "be used to" in B2! 😉
