We use these modal verbs to talk about things we are required to do, or absolutely cannot do.

យើងប្រើកិរិយាសព្ទជំនួយទាំងនេះ (Modal Verbs) ដើម្បីនិយាយអំពីអ្វីដែលយើងត្រូវតែធ្វើ (កាតព្វកិច្ច) ឬហាមមិនឲ្យធ្វើដាច់ខាត។

1. Must vs. Have to

ត្រូវតែ (កាតព្វកិច្ច)

I must study harder.

ខ្ញុំត្រូវតែខិតខំរៀនជាងនេះ។ (ការតាំងចិត្តផ្ទាល់ខ្លួន)

I have to wear a uniform.

ខ្ញុំត្រូវតែពាក់ឯកសណ្ឋាន។ (ច្បាប់សាលា/កាតព្វកិច្ចពីខាងក្រៅ)

2. Don't have to

មិនបាច់ក៏បាន / មិនចាំបាច់ (គ្មានកាតព្វកិច្ច)

You don't have to wake up early.

អ្នកមិនបាច់ក្រោកពីព្រលឹមក៏បាន។ (ធ្វើក៏បាន មិនធ្វើក៏បាន)

She doesn't have to pay.

នាងមិនបាច់បង់ប្រាក់ទេ។ (វាឥតគិតថ្លៃ)

3. Mustn't

ហាម / មិនត្រូវ (បម្រាមដាច់ខាត)

You mustn't smoke here.

អ្នកហាមជក់បារីនៅទីនេះ។ (វាជាបម្រាម)

We mustn't be late!

ពួកយើងមិនត្រូវយឺតទេ! (វានឹងមានបញ្ហា)

The Meaning Trap!

"Don't have to" is NOT the opposite of "Must"!

(ប្រយ័ត្ន! ពាក្យទាំងពីរនេះមានន័យខុសគ្នាស្រឡះ!)

You mustn't go! ❌🏃‍♂️
ហាមទៅដាច់ខាត! (Do NOT go)

You don't have to go. 😌

Good question, Sovan! No, "must" does NOT have a past form. If you want to talk about obligation in the past, you have to use "had to". So you should say: "Yesterday I had to go to the doctor." ✨

Yes, Vireak! "Have got to" means exactly the same thing as "have to". It is just more informal and very common in spoken English. For example: "I've got to go!" = "I have to go!" 👍
