Reading Fluency

Fluency means reading smoothly, at a good speed, and with the right expression.

Strategy 1: Chunking

ការអានជាកន្សោមពាក្យ (មិនមែនអានមួយពាក្យៗទេ)

Read in groups of words:

The young boy walked quickly to the store.

Group words that go together to build meaning faster. ផ្តុំពាក្យដែលទៅជាមួយគ្នា ដើម្បីស្វែងយល់អត្ថន័យបានលឿនជាងមុន។

Strategy 2: Punctuation Pauses

ការផ្អាកតាមសញ្ញាខណ្ឌ

Comma (,) = Short pause

Period (.) = Full stop (longer pause)

When he arrived, the store was closed. ពេលគាត់ទៅដល់ ហាងនោះត្រូវបានបិទបាត់ទៅហើយ។

Strategy 3: Skim & Scan

ការអានត្រួសៗ និងការរាវរកព័ត៌មាន

Skimming Reading quickly to get the main idea (the big picture). ការអានត្រួសៗយកអត្ថន័យរួម (តើអត្ថបទនិយាយពីអ្វី?)

Scanning Looking quickly for specific details (like names, dates, or numbers). ការអានរាវរកព័ត៌មានលម្អិត (ដូចជាឈ្មោះ ថ្ងៃខែ ឬតួលេខ)

Strategy 4: Context Clues

ការទាយអត្ថន័យតាមបរិបទ

If you don't know a word, don't stop! Look at the words around it to guess the meaning. បើសិនជាអ្នកមិនស្គាល់ពាក្យណាមួយ កុំទាន់ឈប់អាន! ត្រូវមើលពាក្យនៅជុំវិញវា ដើម្បីទាយអត្ថន័យ។

"The desert is very arid. It hardly ever rains there."

-> Because "it hardly ever rains", we can guess that "arid" means very dry.

The Word-by-Word Trap! ⚠️

Do not read like a robot!

(កុំអានមួយពាក្យៗយឺតៗ ព្រោះវាធ្វើឲ្យអ្នកបាត់បង់អត្ថន័យរួមនៃប្រយោគ!)

Bad: I... went... to... the... store... to... buy... milk. ❌

Good: [I went to the store] [to buy milk]. 🌟

"The water was frigid. We couldn't swim because it was too cold." What does 'frigid' mean?

When you see a comma (,) in a sentence, you should:

Hi Chantha! This is a very common problem. To stop translating, practice 'Skimming' first. Read a paragraph quickly just to get the main idea without stopping for unknown words. Also, try reading out loud; it forces your brain to focus on the English sounds instead of Khmer translation! 📖🏃‍♂️
