Speaking: Vocabulary for Speaking A1 - Lesson 3
Everyday Objects & Common Verbs
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to name common objects and use simple verbs to describe everyday actions.
Connecting Verbs and Objects
The best way to learn vocabulary is to use it in simple sentences. Let's connect a verb (an action) with an object (a thing). The pattern is: Subject + Verb + Object.
In the Classroom & At Home
- I read1 a book.9
- I write2 with a pen.10
- I use3 my phone.11
- I watch4 TV.12
- I open5 the door.13
- I close6 the window.14

Pronunciation Focus: Vowel Sounds
Pay attention to the vowel sounds in these common verbs. The sound can be short or long.
- Short 'i' sound (/ɪ/): The sound is quick. Listen: drink, live.
- Long 'ee' sound (/iː/): The sound is longer. Listen: read, eat.
Saying these sounds correctly will make your speaking much clearer.
Making Simple Sentences
The pattern for most simple English sentences is Subject + Verb + Object.
I + read + a book.
Remember to use "a" or "an" before a singular object. For example, we say "I use a pen," not "I use pen." We don't need to use "a" for things like rice or water.
Practice Your Vocabulary
Activity 1: Match the Verb to the Object
Connect the action to the thing.
- read -> a book
- drink -> water
- watch -> TV
- write -> with a pen
Activity 2: Mime Game
This is a fun game to play with a partner. One person pretends to do an action from the lesson (like drinking water). The other person must guess the full sentence: "You are drinking water."
Activity 3: What's in Your Bag?
Look in your bag. Find two things and make a sentence for each one. For example: "I have a pen. I write with my pen." "I have a phone. I use my phone."
Your Vocabulary Mission
This week in Siem Reap, your mission is to practice using this new vocabulary.
Look around your home or classroom. Find five objects. For each object, say a full sentence in English about what you do with it. For example, point to a door and say, "I open the door."
