❌ The "Dead-End" Chat

Rithy "How was your weekend?"
Sophea (You) "Good."
(Silence... The conversation dies.)

✅ The "Active" Chat (A-R-C)

Rithy "I went to a new café in BKK1 yesterday."
Sophea (You)
Ack "Oh, really? That sounds nice!"
Relate "I love trying new coffee shops."
Continue "Was the coffee good?"

The A-R-C Formula

A - Acknowledge ទទួលដឹង
Show you heard them with a reaction.
"Wow!", "Oh no!", "Really?", "I see."
R - Relate ផ្សារភ្ជាប់
Connect their story to yourself (briefly).
"I feel the same way.", "That reminds me of..."
C - Continue បន្តសួរ
Ask a follow-up question (The most important part!).
"What happened next?", "Why did you do that?"

Intonation Tip: Echo Questions

Repeat a keyword with a Rising Tone (↗) to show surprise and ask for more.

"He paid for everyone?" (Everyone? ↗)

Pick the Active Response

Statement: "I'm so tired. I worked 12 hours yesterday."

Which response keeps it going?
A. "I like my job."
B. "That is a long day."
C. "Oh no! (Ack) Why did you have to work so long? (Continue)"

Statement: "I've decided I want to learn Japanese."

Which response uses an Echo Question?
A. "Japanese? (↗) That's cool! Why Japanese?"
B. "I speak Japanese too."
