Lesson: Word Stress (2 Syllables) Welcome to your auditory training layout! I am your trainer, លោកគ្រូ សុភ័ក្ត. In English, we do not pronounce every syllable with equal force. One part of a word is always stronger, louder, and higher in pitch. Core Word Stress Rules: Nouns & Adjectives: Generally stressed on the first syllable. Examples: WATER, TEACHER, HAPPY. Verbs & Prepositions: Generally stressed on the second syllable. Examples: be-GIN, de-CIDE, ex-PLAIN. Word Chameleons: Nouns stress the first syllable (PRE-sent); verbs stress the second syllable (pre-SENT).
