Speaking: Grammar in Speaking B1 - Lesson 2: Using Past Continuous for Setting Scenes
Lesson: Setting the Scene (Past Continuous) Welcome to your conversational storytelling module. When sharing past experiences, introducing a vivid atmosphere elevates your spoken skills. We use the Past Continuous tense to establish what was occurring in the background right before the primary event took place. Core Structural Rules: Singular Form: Subject + was + Verb-ing (e.g., The sun was shining.) Plural Form: Subject + were + Verb-ing (e.g., The birds were singing.) Contrasting Events: Use Past Continuous for background states and Past Simple for sudden interruptions. Parallel Actions: Connect two concurrent background states using 'while'. Linguistic Trap: State Verbs Verbs indicating emotional or cognitive states (such as know, want, need, love, understand) cannot accept progressive -ing structures. Use Past Simple instead.
