Reading Between the Lines

ការអានយកន័យលាក់កំបាំង

At the B2 level, authors don't tell you everything directly. You must use clues to find the implied meaning.

អ្នកនិពន្ធមិនប្រាប់យើងរាល់ចំណុចចំៗនោះទេ។ យើងត្រូវេះទាញសេចក្តីសន្និដ្ឋានដោយខ្លួនឯង តាមរយៈតម្រុយក្នុងអត្ថបទ។

Implied Information psychology

ព័ត៌មានបង្កប់ន័យ (Information not stated directly)
Text "He grabbed his umbrella and raincoat before opening the door." "គាត់បានចាប់យកឆ័ត្រ និងអាវភ្លៀង មុនពេលបើកទ្វារ។"
Inference (ការសន្និដ្ឋាន) It is raining outside. ខាងក្រៅកំពុងតែភ្លៀង។ (អត្ថបទមិនបានប្រាប់ចំៗថាភ្លៀងទេ)
theater_comedy

Sarcasm theater_comedy

ការនិយាយបញ្ចួស / សើចចំអក

Saying the opposite of what is true, usually to be funny or critical.

Text "Oh, brilliant! Another flat tire. This is exactly what I needed today." "អូ! ល្អណាស់! បែកកង់មួយទៀតហើយ។ នេះជាអ្វីដែលខ្ញុំចង់បានម៉ាច់តែម្តងថ្ងៃនេះ។"
Inference The person is angry and frustrated. អ្នកនិយាយកំពុងខឹង និងខកចិត្ត។ វាមិនមែនជារឿង "ល្អ" នោះទេ!
sentiment_satisfied

Humor & Exaggeration sentiment_satisfied

ការលេងសើច និងការនិយាយបំប៉ោង

Making things sound bigger or crazier than they are to make the reader laugh.

Text "My dog thinks he is the king of the house, and I am just his butler." "ឆ្កែខ្ញុំគិតថាវាជាស្តេចនៅក្នុងផ្ទះ ហើយខ្ញុំគ្រាន់តែជាអ្នកបម្រើរបស់វាប៉ុណ្ណោះ។"
Inference The dog is spoiled and demanding. សត្វឆ្កែនេះត្រូវបានគេតាមចិត្ត និងចូលចិត្តបញ្ជា។ (វាមិនមែនជាស្តេចមែនទែនទេ!)
warning The Literal Trap!

Do not take sarcasm literally!

(កុំប្រែការនិយាយបញ្ចួសតាមពាក្យចំៗ! បើអ្នកអានយល់ច្រឡំ អត្ថន័យនឹងប្រែប្រួល ១៨០ ដឺក្រេ។)
"Great job breaking the TV!"
He is praising them.

(ខុស! គាត់មិនមែនកំពុងសរសើរទេ។) ❌
"Great job breaking the TV!"
He is very angry.

TRAP QUESTION! error
True or False: Sarcasm means exactly what the words say.
(ពិត ឬ ខុស: ការនិយាយបញ្ចួស មានន័យដូចអ្វីដែលពាក្យបានសរសេរចំៗ។)
sentiment_satisfied
Identify Humor
"I have a million things to do before the party tonight."
Why did the author write this? (ហេតុអ្វីបានជាអ្នកនិពន្ធសរសេរបែបនេះ?)

Look for extreme adjectives combined with a bad situation! For example, saying "Fantastic!" right after failing a test. The opposite context is your biggest clue. psychology

Usually not in formal writing or business! It can sound rude. But it is very common in casual speech, novels, and with friends. theater_comedy

A lie tries to trick you into believing something false. Sarcasm expects you to KNOW the truth, so you understand the joke or the criticism. lightbulb
