What You Will Learn

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Understand what reading fluency means (reading smoothly, accurately, and with good pacing).
  • Practice reading simple English sentences aloud.
  • Improve your ability to read sentences without too many stops or hesitations.

Hello Cambodian Learners!

Reading fluently means reading smoothly, like water flowing in a river! It's not just about knowing the words, but also about reading them at a good speed and with understanding. The more you practice reading aloud, the more fluent you will become. This will make reading in English much more enjoyable and easier, whether you are reading a story or information about your studies.

What is Reading Fluency?

Reading fluency includes:

  • Accuracy: Reading the words correctly.
  • Pacing: Reading at a comfortable speed – not too fast, not too slow.
  • Expression (Prosody): Reading with feeling, paying attention to punctuation (like full stops and question marks).

How to improve fluency? Practice, practice, practice! Re-reading the same sentences or short texts can help a lot.

Tips for Practicing:

  • Read aloud to yourself.
  • Listen to someone read the text, then try to read it like them.
  • Don't worry too much about every single word if you're practicing for speed. Try to get the general flow.
  • Break longer sentences into smaller parts (phrases) to read more smoothly.
