Listening: Listening for Specific Information A1 - Lesson 2: Identifying Times and Dates in Simple Announcements

Listening A1 - Specific Info Lesson 2
Listening for Specific Info A1

Times & Dates

Lesson Goals

  • Identify specific times (e.g., 3:15, half past two).
  • Understand dates and days (e.g., Monday, May 1st).
  • Listen for "AT" (time) and "ON" (day).

When you are at a train station, airport, or meeting, you need to catch the Time and the Date accurately. Missing one number can mean missing your bus!

1. Listening for Time 🕒

There are two ways to say time in English.

Digital Way
3:30

"Three thirty"

Classic Way
🕐

"Half past three"

Key words to listen for:

  • O'clock: Exact hour (5:00).
  • Half past: 30 minutes (5:30).
  • Quarter to: 15 mins before (5:45).

2. Listening for Dates 📅

Dates use Ordinal Numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd), not normal numbers (1, 2, 3).

  • We write: May 1
  • We say: "May the First"
Listen carefully for the ends of words:
1st (First), 2nd (Second), 3rd (Third), 4th (Fourth).
Grammar Tip: AT vs ON

Prepositions help you know if you are listening for a TIME or a DAY.

  • AT + Time: "The bus leaves at 5:00."
  • ON + Day/Date: "The party is on Monday."

Practice Activity: Fill the Ticket

Listen to the announcement and find the missing info.
