2. Grammar: Second & Third Conditionals
In B2 English, conditionals help us express hypothetical situations. We use the Second Conditional for imaginary or unlikely situations in the present/future, and the Third Conditional to talk about impossible past situations (things that didn't happen).
| Conditional Type | Structure | Usage & Example |
|---|---|---|
| Second Conditional | If + Past Simple, ... would + base verb | Hypothetical present/future. "If Dara moved abroad, he would miss his farm." |
| Third Conditional | If + Past Perfect, ... would have + past participle | Hypothetical past. "If Nita had taken the loan, she would have built more rooms." |
Grammar Practice - Part 1: Second Conditional (Hypothetical Present/Future)
Grammar Practice - Part 2: Third Conditional (Hypothetical Past)
3. Reading: Context in Kampot
"If I had known Kampot would become such a hub for an expatriate community, I would have expanded the guesthouse five years ago," Nita sighed, taking a seat opposite Dara. "If I had taken that bank loan, we would have had ten more rooms by now."
Dara smiled, stirring his tea. "It's true. The demographics are changing. More people want to emigrate from their stressful city lives in Europe or America and find peace here. But the bureaucracy involved in getting a long-term visa and a work permit can be overwhelming for them."
"Exactly," Nita agreed. "If the government made the integration process simpler, more skilled workers would move here to start businesses and hire locally."
"But we also need strict border control to ensure the local economy isn't disrupted," Dara pointed out. "If everyone could just move here without rules, our local culture might suffer. We don't want people facing severe culture shock or failing to respect our traditions. Plus, some individuals come seeking asylum from difficult situations abroad, which is a different legal process entirely."
"It's a delicate balance," Nita noted. "Yesterday, a guest was almost forced to leave. Immigration authorities were threatening to deport him because his visa had expired and he hadn't filed the right paperwork. If he had listened to my advice last month, he wouldn't have been in such a terrible situation."
Dara nodded, looking out at the pepper vines in the distance. "Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if I moved abroad. If I emigrated to France, I would probably miss the taste of fresh Kampot pepper too much. I'd be the one struggling with integration! If I were an immigrant in a new country, I would probably spend my first year just trying to understand the legal system."
"If you left, who would supply my kitchen?" Nita laughed. "We need you right here. If they hadn't moved here, we would have missed out on sharing our culture with them. It brings the world to our doorstep without us having to pack a single bag."

Dear Immigration Office,
I am writing to request information about emigrating to Kampot, Cambodia. I currently run an agricultural export business, and I am interested in collaborating with local pepper farmers like Dara.
If I relocated my business to Kampot next year, what type of work permit would I need? Furthermore, if I had submitted an application last month, how long would it have taken to process the initial bureaucracy?
Thank you for your assistance with my integration planning.
Sincerely,
