2. Grammar: Defining vs. Non-Defining Relative Clauses

At the B2 level, it is essential to distinguish between defining and non-defining relative clauses. Defining clauses provide essential information to identify the noun. Non-defining clauses provide extra, non-essential information and are separated by commas.

Clause Type Function & Punctuation Example in Context
Defining Gives essential information. No commas used. We can use "that" instead of "who" or "which". The students who study at RUPP are very tech-savvy. (Tells us exactly which students).
Non-Defining Gives extra information. Must be separated by commas. We CANNOT use "that". Chea, who studies at RUPP, is very tech-savvy. (We already know who Chea is; the clause is extra info).

Grammar Practice: Part 1 - Relative Pronouns

1. Bopha, works as an office manager, understands mainstream fashion.
2. The cafe in BKK1 young creators gather is very expensive.
3. A trendsetter is a person style influences a large subculture.

Grammar Practice: Part 2 - Commas or No Commas?

Type yes if the sentence needs commas (Non-Defining). Type no if it does not (Defining).

1. The smartphone which Bopha bought is a major status symbol.
2. Phnom Penh which is the capital of Cambodia has a vibrant youth culture.

3. Reading: Context in Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh, the bustling capital of Cambodia, is a dynamic city where tradition and modernity constantly intersect. For young people like Chea, a twenty-one-year-old university student, and Bopha, a twenty-four-year-old office worker, navigating this vibrant youth culture is a daily adventure. The generation gap, which often creates misunderstandings between older and younger Cambodians, is especially noticeable when it comes to technology and fashion.

Chea, who studies at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, considers himself a trendsetter among his friends. He is highly tech-savvy, a trait that helps him stay connected with global youth movements. While his parents grew up in a very different era, Chea is exposed to a subculture of digital nomads, vloggers, and indie musicians. On weekends, he often visits cafes in BKK1, where young creators gather. This area, which is known for its trendy coffee shops, has become a hub for the city's creative youth.

On the other hand, Bopha works in a corporate environment. She frequently feels the peer pressure to conform to certain professional standards. In her office, having the latest smartphone or carrying a branded bag acts as a powerful status symbol. However, Bopha is mindful not to alienate her family members, who hold more conservative values. She respects the mainstream cultural norms of her parents but enjoys her financial independence. "It is about finding a balance," Bopha explains. "I can appreciate modern global trends, which I see online every day, without losing my Cambodian identity."

The contrast between defining and non-defining relative clauses is much like the contrast in their lives. The traditions that guide them are essential defining elements, while the modern trends, which are constantly changing, provide non-defining extra color to their existence. For instance, the traditional festivals that they celebrate with their families keep them grounded. Conversely, the foreign fashion brands, which they buy online, are simply forms of self-expression.

Occasionally, youth culture involves a slight rebellion against outdated societal expectations. Young people today are advocating for more career choices, environmental awareness, and mental health support. Yet, this rebellion is rarely disrespectful. Instead, it is a gradual evolution. Chea and Bopha represent a dynamic generation. They are young Cambodians who respect their roots but are unafraid to look toward the future. By embracing both their heritage and the globalized world, they are redefining what it means to grow up in modern Phnom Penh.

Reading Comprehension

1. According to the text, why does Bopha conform to certain standards at work?
2. How does the author compare modern trends to relative clauses?

4. Listening: Conversation in BKK1

Chea: I noticed your new phone, Bopha. Is it the model which was just released last week?
Bopha: Yes, it is. To be honest, I felt some peer pressure at the office. Everyone has one. It is basically a status symbol now.
Chea: That makes sense. But do you worry that conforming to mainstream trends might alienate you from your own personal style?
Bopha: Sometimes. My parents, who do not understand tech at all, think it is a foolish rebellion. The generation gap is real!

Listening Quiz

1. Bopha bought the new phone because she is a trendsetter who loves tech.
2. Bopha's parents believe that buying the expensive phone is a form of rebellion.

5. Speaking: Roleplay Practice

Chea
Do you think teenagers in Phnom Penh are losing their traditional values?
Bopha (You)
Not entirely. Teenagers, who are very tech-savvy, still respect the mainstream traditions of their families.

6. Writing: Your Turn

Look at the model text. Notice how the writer uses Defining and Non-Defining Relative Clauses.

"In my opinion, the generation gap in Cambodia is widening. Young people, who are exposed to global internet trends, often adopt different subcultures. However, the core values that our parents taught us remain important. We do not want to alienate the older generation."

Your Turn to Write: Short Opinion Essay

In modern society, peer pressure, (non-defining clause about peer pressure), causes many teenagers to conform. Social media platforms, (non-defining clause with 'where'), act as a space for trendsetters. However, the students (defining clause starting with 'who') often find a healthy balance. Ultimately, a status symbol (defining clause with 'that') does not define a person's true worth.
