2. Grammar: Passive Voice (Present/Past)

We use the Passive Voice when the action is more important than who did it. In advertising, we often focus on the product, the campaign, or the service, rather than the marketing team.

Tense Structure Active Example Passive Example
Present Passive am / is / are + Verb 3 (Past Participle) Tourists read the flyers. The flyers are read by tourists.
Past Passive was / were + Verb 3 (Past Participle) Ary created a new slogan. A new slogan was created by Ary.

Grammar Practice: Part 1 (Present Passive)

1. Every day, the tuk-tuk (clean) by Vannak so it looks nice for tourists.
2. Hundreds of flyers (print) at the local shop to promote the tours.
3. The famous brand (know) by people all over the world.

Grammar Practice: Part 2 (Past Passive)

1. Last month, a new social media campaign (launch) to attract visitors to Siem Reap.
2. The positive reviews (write) by tourists from France and Japan.
3. A large billboard (place) near the airport to catch the target audience.

3. Reading: Advertising in Siem Reap

Siem Reap is changing fast, and the way local businesses are promoted is also changing. In the past, most tourists were found at the local markets, and services were advertised simply. For example, a flyer was handed out to visitors at the airport, or a tuk-tuk driver waited outside a hotel. Today, things are different.

Ary, a smart tour guide in Siem Reap, understands modern advertising. She knows that a specific target audience must be reached. Last year, a new social media campaign was launched by her tour company. Beautiful photos of Angkor Wat were shared online, and the company's brand was seen by thousands of people around the world. Their new slogan, “Experience the True Cambodia,” was created to attract cultural explorers.

Vannak, a hard-working tuk-tuk driver, still relies a lot on word of mouth. When tourists have a great time exploring the temples with him, his excellent service is recommended to their friends. However, Ary recently gave him some good advice. “Your tuk-tuk is seen by hundreds of people every day, Vannak,” she said. “But to grow your business, a good online review is needed. Also, an advertisement should be placed on Facebook.”

Together, they decided to upgrade his business. A new Facebook page was made for Vannak’s tours. Soon, his services were booked by travelers before they even arrived in Cambodia! Large billboards aren't needed for a small business. Instead, clever digital marketing and good service are appreciated by modern tourists.

Reading Comprehension

1. How was Vannak's business mostly promoted in the past?

Ary: Your new Facebook page looks great, Vannak. A lot of photos were posted yesterday!
Vannak: Thank you, Ary. But how do I get more customers? Word of mouth is slow right now.
Ary: A social media campaign should be started. First, we need a catchy slogan.
Vannak: How about: "The best tuk-tuk in Siem Reap"?
Ary: That is good! After the slogan is chosen, an advertisement can be shown to your target audience.

Listening Quiz

1. A lot of photos were posted on Vannak's Facebook page yesterday.

2. Vannak thinks word of mouth is bringing him too many customers.

5. Speaking: Roleplay Practice
