3. Reading: Connection in Kampong Speu
The sun rises over the tall palm trees in Kampong Speu as Samnang climbs down from his morning harvest. He wipes the sweat from his forehead and reaches into his pocket for his phone. He needs to check the weather forecast. Heavy dark clouds are forming in the distance over the mountains.
"It might rain this afternoon," he thinks. "I must collect the rest of the palm juice quickly before the storm arrives."
He tries to open his weather application, but the screen freezes. He decides to update the software because his phone has been running slowly for days. After a few minutes, he realizes he can't connect to Wi-Fi out here in the fields, and his mobile data is weak. "I must be about to lose signal," he mutters to himself.
Suddenly, his phone buzzes. He checks notifications and sees a message from his sister, Rasmey. She is a factory worker in a busy district nearby. Instead of typing, Rasmey decided to send a voice message because her hands were busy getting ready for her morning shift.
"Hi Samnang! I'm trying to send money to our parents, but the banking app isn't working. It can't be broken again! Could you download an app called 'FastPay' and see if it works for you?"
Samnang listens and smiles. He opens his settings to delete a file so he has enough storage space for the new app. Just then, his battery icon flashes red. "Oh no, I only have 5% left. I must charge the battery soon," he realizes.
Before his phone turns off, he quickly decides to share a location pin with his usual palm sugar buyer, so they know exactly where to pick up today's harvest. Finally, while resting under a tree, he uses his last 2% of battery to scroll through social media. Farming in Kampong Speu is hard work, but these tools certainly make communication easier!
