Welcome to Module 6: Reading Fluency & Strategies! I am Teacher Sopheak. Recognizing vocabulary is important, but true reading comprehension requires understanding the flow of a sentence. Today, we will practice physical text tracking to keep your eyes focused, and we will decode the punctuation marks that act as traffic signs for your voice.
1. Physical Tracking: Left to Right
English text is strictly processed from Left to Right, and from Top to Bottom. When beginning your reading journey, use your index finger or a pen to point to each word as you read it. This physical anchor prevents your eyes from skipping words or jumping lines accidentally.
2. Basic Punctuation: Traffic Signs
Punctuation marks are instructions for your voice. They tell you exactly when to stop, when to pause for a breath, and when to change your tone. Ignoring them makes your reading sound robotic and confusing.
Many beginners believe reading fast makes them fluent. They read straight through periods without pausing. This destroys the meaning of the text. Speed is not fluency. Accuracy and pausing create true fluency.
