Welcome to your B1 Intermediate Reading module! I am Teacher Sopheak. A major barrier to reading fluency is the habit of stopping to check a dictionary every time you see an unknown word. Advanced readers do not do this; they act as linguistic detectives, using the surrounding sentence structure to deduce the meaning instantly.
Today, we will analyze context clues, decode phrasal verbs organically, and use word families to expand your vocabulary multiplier.
1. Deducing Meaning via Context Clues
When you encounter a new vocabulary target, search the immediate environment for synonyms (words with similar meanings), antonyms (words with opposite meanings), or direct explanations embedded in the sentence.
Analysis: We do not need a dictionary to know what 'lucrative' means. The explanation clause tells us it involves generating heavy profit.
Deduction: Lucrative = Profitable / Making money.
Analysis: The word 'While' creates a contrast. If the brother is 'lazy', Sophea must be the opposite.
Deduction: Diligent = Hardworking.
2. Phrasal Verbs in Context
Phrasal verbs (verb + preposition) rarely mean what their individual words suggest. They must be decoded as a single, combined conceptual unit based entirely on the surrounding situation.
Analysis: You cannot physically 'put' an event 'off' a table. The time clue "until next week" indicates a change in schedule.
Deduction: Put off = To delay / Postpone.
A severe reading block occurs when students try to translate phrasal verbs literally. If you read the sentence "He decided to give up smoking," translating 'give' (to hand over) and 'up' (towards the sky) creates absolute confusion.
3. Morphological Word Families
When you learn one core root word, you can instantly multiply your vocabulary by recognizing its suffixes (endings). A suffix tells you the structural role of the word (Noun, Verb, Adjective, or Adverb) without changing its core meaning.
Root Concept: COMPETE
To try to win against others.
Vocabulary Deduction Evaluation
Based on the surrounding sentence, what does 'versatile' mean?
What is the logical translation of the phrasal block?
