Welcome to Module 3 of your B2 reading track. I am Teacher Sopheak. At this upper-intermediate level, reading shifts from simply translating individual words to understanding the invisible architecture of a text. Cohesion is the grammatical glue that holds sentences together, and coherence is how the logic flows.
By mastering discourse markers, abstract referencing, and topic shifts, you will dramatically increase your reading speed and academic comprehension.
1. Complex Cohesive Devices
Cohesive devices are transition words that act as road signs for the reader. They dictate exactly how the next sentence will relate to the previous one—whether it will add information, show a result, or introduce a contradiction.
The company severely cut its marketing budget. Consequently, their overall sales plummeted.
The weather conditions were extremely dangerous. Nevertheless, the rescue team proceeded.
The new policy improves efficiency. Furthermore, it reduces operating costs by 15%.
A very common error in B2 reading comprehension tasks involves confusing the grammatical structure of contrast words. Although connects two clauses in one continuous sentence. However introduces a completely new independent sentence.
2. Abstract Referencing (Pronouns & Phrases)
To avoid repeating vocabulary, B2-level writers use sophisticated referencing. Instead of using simple pronouns like "it" or "they", authors will use phrases like "this phenomenon", "such measures", or academic pairings like "the former" and "the latter".
We offered them tea or coffee. They chose the latter. (Meaning: They chose coffee).
Temperatures rise drastically in urban centers. This phenomenon is known as the heat island effect.
3. Tracking Shifts in Focus
Authors frequently pivot their arguments mid-paragraph. Recognizing the precise marker where the focus shifts (from theory to practice, or pros to cons) prevents you from misinterpreting the author's final stance.
Northern regions suffered heavy rainfall. Conversely, the southern provinces experienced a severe drought.
The software was designed to be user-friendly. In reality, most clients found the interface confusing.
