Core Reading Strategies: Skimming: Rapidly reading to understand the main argument or "gist." Focus on the thesis statement, topic sentences, and concluding summaries. Scanning: Visually searching a document for a specific piece of dense information, such as a name, date, or percentage, while ignoring the surrounding prose. The Linear Reading Trap: Many students fail reading proficiency exams because they treat a text like a novel, reading from left to right.
