Welcome! When my students in Battambang speak English, they often skip the tiny words like 'a' or 'the'. In English, these little words are called Articles, and they are incredibly important! They tell the listener if we are talking about any general thing, or one very specific thing. Let's look at the rules for "A", "An", and "The".
នៅពេលដែលសិស្សរបស់ខ្ញុំនៅបាត់ដំបងនិយាយភាសាអង់គ្លេស ពួកគេច្រើនតែរំលងពាក្យតូចៗដូចជា 'a' ឬ 'the'។ នៅក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស ពាក្យតូចៗទាំងនេះហៅថា អត្ថបទ (Articles) ហើយវាមានសារៈសំខាន់ណាស់! ពួកវាប្រាប់អ្នកស្តាប់ថាតើយើងកំពុងនិយាយអំពីវត្ថុទូទៅ ឬវត្ថុជាក់លាក់ណាមួយ។
warning Common Mistake
In Khmer, we don't have words that directly translate to 'a', 'an', or 'the'. We usually just say the noun and add a number (like 'Tuk-Tuk one'). In English, remember that a singular, countable noun almost always needs an article in front of it!
នៅក្នុងភាសាខ្មែរ យើងមិនមានពាក្យដែលបកប្រែចំៗថា 'a', 'an', ឬ 'the' ទេ។ យើងច្រើនតែនិយាយនាម ហើយថែមលេខពីក្រោយ។ នៅក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស សូមចងចាំថានាមឯកវចនៈដែលរាប់បាន ស្ទើរតែតែងតែត្រូវការ មាត្រា (article) នៅពីមុខវាជានិច្ច!

General (Consonant)
A Tuk-Tuk
Use "A" before words that start with a consonant sound (like T, G, B). It means "one general thing."
ប្រើ "A" នៅពីមុខពាក្យដែលចាប់ផ្តើមដោយសំឡេងព្យញ្ជនៈ។ វាមានន័យថា "វត្ថុទូទៅមួយ"។
Example: I take a tuk-tuk to Phsar Nath every morning.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ខ្ញុំជិះម៉ូតូកង់បីមួយទៅផ្សារណាត់ជារៀងរាល់ព្រឹក។
General (Consonant)
A Guide
Use "A" because "Guide" starts with a 'G' sound. It refers to any guide, not a specific one yet.
ប្រើ "A" ព្រោះពាក្យ "Guide" ចាប់ផ្តើមដោយសំឡេងព្យញ្ជនៈ។ វាសំដៅលើមគ្គុទ្ទេសក៍ណាម្នាក់ មិនមែនជាក់លាក់នោះទេ។
Example: The tourists want to hire a guide for the village tour.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ភ្ញៀវទេសចរចង់ជួលមគ្គុទ្ទេសក៍ម្នាក់សម្រាប់ដំណើរកម្សាន្តតាមភូមិ។
General (Vowel)
An Elephant
Use "An" before words that start with a vowel sound (A, E, I, O, U). This makes it easier to say!
ប្រើ "An" នៅពីមុខពាក្យដែលចាប់ផ្តើមដោយសំឡេងស្រៈ។ វាធ្វើឲ្យងាយស្រួលក្នុងការបញ្ចេញសំឡេង!
Example: Sophea saw an elephant when she visited Mondulkiri.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ សុភាបានឃើញដំរីមួយក្បាលពេលនាងទៅលេងមណ្ឌលគិរី។
General (Vowel)
An Umbrella
Use "An" because "Umbrella" starts with a 'U' vowel sound.
ប្រើ "An" ព្រោះពាក្យ "Umbrella" ចាប់ផ្តើមដោយសំឡេងស្រៈ 'U'។
Example: It is raining, so please bring an umbrella to the market.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ មេឃកំពុងភ្លៀង ដូច្នេះសូមយកឆ័ត្រមួយទៅផ្សារផង។
Specific (Known)
The River
Use "The" when talking about a specific thing that both you and the listener already know about (like the Sangker River).
ប្រើ "The" នៅពេលនិយាយអំពីអ្វីមួយដែលអ្នក និងអ្នកស្តាប់ស្គាល់រួចហើយ (ឧទាហរណ៍ ស្ទឹងសង្កែ)។
Example: We sat by the river to eat our snacks.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ពួកយើងអង្គុយលេងក្បែរមាត់ស្ទឹងដើម្បីញ៉ាំចំណី។
Specific (Unique)
The Sun
Use "The" for things that are completely unique. There is only one sun!
ប្រើ "The" សម្រាប់អ្វីដែលមានតែមួយគត់។ មានព្រះអាទិត្យតែមួយគត់!
Example: The sun is very hot today in Cambodia.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ថ្ងៃនេះព្រះអាទិត្យក្តៅខ្លាំងណាស់នៅប្រទេសកម្ពុជា។
