Welcome to B1 Grammar! As my students and I discuss our experiences here in Siem Reap, we often need to tell stories about things that happened unexpectedly. To do this correctly, we combine two tenses. We use the Past Continuous for the long background action, and the Past Simple for the sudden event that interrupts it.

warning Common B1 Mistake
A common error is using the Simple Past for both actions (e.g., "I walked when it rained"). Remember the formula: [Subject + was/were + V-ing] WHEN [Subject + V-ed].
កំហុសទូទៅមួយគឺការប្រើប្រាស់ Simple Past សម្រាប់សកម្មភាពទាំងពីរ (ឧទាហរណ៍ "I walked when it rained")។ សូមចងចាំរូបមន្ត៖ [ប្រធាន + was/were + V-ing] WHEN [ប្រធាន + V-ed (អតីតកាល)]។

កំពុងញ៉ាំ / បានចាប់ផ្តើម - សកម្មភាពជាក្រុមដែលកំពុងបន្ត ត្រូវបានរំខានដោយស្ថានភាពថ្មី។
Example: We were eating dinner at Pub Street when it started to rain heavily.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ពួកយើងកំពុងញ៉ាំអាហារពេលល្ងាចនៅ Pub Street ស្រាប់តែមេឃចាប់ផ្តើមភ្លៀងយ៉ាងខ្លាំង។

កំពុងបើកបរ / បានខូច - ការធ្វើដំណើរដែលកំពុងបន្ត ត្រូវបានបញ្ឈប់ដោយបញ្ហាម៉ាស៊ីន។
Example: We were driving to the airport when the tuk-tuk broke down.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ពួកយើងកំពុងធ្វើដំណើរទៅព្រលានយន្តហោះ ស្រាប់តែម៉ូតូកង់បីបានខូច។

A focused, continuous activity interrupted by a fast, unexpected action.
កំពុងថត / បានលួច - សកម្មភាពដែលកំពុងផ្ដោតអារម្មណ៍ ត្រូវបានរំខានដោយទង្វើដែលមិននឹកស្មានដល់។
Example: While the tourist was taking a photo at Angkor Wat, a monkey stole his water bottle.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ខណៈពេលដែលភ្ញៀវទេសចរកំពុងថតរូបនៅអង្គរវត្ត សត្វស្វាបានលួចដបទឹករបស់គាត់។

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ខ្ញុំកំពុងគេងក្នុងបន្ទប់សណ្ឋាគារ ស្រាប់តែបុគ្គលិកបានគោះទ្វារ។

Waiting over a period of time until a specific event finally happens.
កំពុងរង់ចាំ / បានមកដល់ - កំពុងរង់ចាំក្នុងរយៈពេលមួយ រហូតដល់មានព្រឹត្តិការណ៍ជាក់លាក់ណាមួយកើតឡើង។
Example: We were waiting in the lobby when the tour guide arrived.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ពួកយើងកំពុងរង់ចាំនៅក្នុងកន្លែងទទួលភ្ញៀវ ពេលដែលមគ្គុទ្ទេសក៍ទេសចរណ៍បានមកដល់។
