Lesson 2: Homophones & Homographs

Welcome back to class! I am Mr. Sopheak, your English teacher. Today, we are tackling some tricky English words.

Sometimes words sound exactly the same but mean different things (we call these Homophones). Other times, words are spelled exactly the same but are pronounced differently and have different meanings (we call these Homographs). Let's master them so you never order the wrong thing at a restaurant!

Homophone

Sea /siː/ សមុទ្រ

ទឹកប្រៃដែលគ្របដណ្តប់ផ្នែកធំនៃផែនដី (សមុទ្រ)។

Example: We traveled to Kep to swim in the sea.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ពួកយើងបានធ្វើដំណើរទៅខេត្តកែបដើម្បីហែលទឹកសមុទ្រ។

Homophone

See /siː/ ឃើញ / មើល

មើលឃើញដោយប្រើភ្នែករបស់អ្នក។

Example: Did you see the beautiful sunset at Angkor Wat?

សាច់សត្វដែលប្រើសម្រាប់ធ្វើម្ហូប។

Example: Beef Lok Lak is a famous dish made with meat.

Meet /miːt/ ជួប

ជួបនរណាម្នាក់ ឬមកជួបជុំគ្នា។

Example: I will meet the tour guide at the hotel lobby.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ខ្ញុំនឹងជួបមគ្គុទ្ទេសក៍ទេសចរណ៍នៅកន្លែងទទួលភ្ញៀវក្នុងសណ្ឋាគារ។

Homograph

Close /kloʊs/ ជិត (ក្បែរ)

នៅក្បែរទីកន្លែង ឬពេលវេលា (គុណនាម)។ បញ្ចេញសំឡេងអក្សរ "s" នៅខាងចុង។

Example: The night market is very close to our hotel.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ផ្សាររាត្រីនៅជិតសណ្ឋាគាររបស់យើងណាស់។

Homograph

Close /kloʊz/ បិទ

បិទអ្វីមួយ (កិរិយាសព្ទ)។ បញ្ចេញសំឡេងអក្សរ "z" នៅខាងចុង។

Example: Please close the door; the air conditioner is on.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ សូមបិទទ្វារ ម៉ាស៊ីនត្រជាក់កំពុងបើក។
