Welcome to B1 Vocabulary! When you speak English, using the same basic words repeatedly can make you sound unnatural.
This lesson introduces Synonyms (words with similar meanings), Antonyms (opposites), and Phrasal Verbs (verb phrases with unique meanings) to help you expand your vocabulary and speak more naturally in hospitality, business, and daily life.

Professional Focus: Repeating the words "good" or "big" can make your English sound unnatural.
Synonyms (words that mean the same thing) and Antonyms (opposites) help you describe things more professionally. We will also look at Phrasal Verbs—two or three words together that create a completely new action.
warning Vocabulary Tip
Do not translate Phrasal Verbs word-by-word. For example, the phrasal verb "pick up" means "to collect someone in a vehicle," not to physically lift them into the air! You must learn the whole phrase together.

Synonyms and Antonyms
Synonyms are words that have the same or very similar meaning. They help you avoid repeating the same word. For example, instead of saying something is "very beautiful," you can say it is "stunning."
Antonyms are words with opposite meanings. Examples include "ancient" (very old) and "modern" (new).
Phrasal Verbs
A phrasal verb is a phrase that combines a verb with a preposition or an adverb (or both). Together, they create a meaning that is different from the original verb.
Pick up: To go and collect someone or something.
Look forward to: To feel excited about something that is going to happen in the future.
