This is completely normal because Khmer grammar is very different from English! Today, we will look at 6 common translation mistakes and learn how to fix them so you can write with confidence.

warning The Golden Rule
Do not translate word-for-word from Khmer! English has strict rules about "hidden" words like 'a', 'an', and 'is' that we do not use in the Khmer language. Always check your sentence structure.

To Be Verb
I am a teacher.
I teacher. In English, you must use the "be" verb (am, is, are) to connect a person to their job or status.
កំហុសទូទៅ៖ "I teacher." នៅក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស អ្នកត្រូវតែប្រើកិរិយាសព្ទ "be" (am, is, are) ដើម្បីភ្ជាប់មនុស្សទៅនឹងការងាររបស់ពួកគេ។
Correct: Sopheak is a guide. (Not: Sopheak guide).
ត្រឹមត្រូវ៖ សុភ័ក្ត គឺជាមគ្គុទ្ទេសក៍។
Word Order
Red car
Car red. In Khmer, the noun comes first. In English, the describing word (adjective) always comes before the noun.
កំហុសទូទៅ៖ "Car red." នៅក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស ពាក្យពណ៌នា (គុណនាម) តែងតែមក មុន នាម។
Correct: We took a red tuk-tuk to the market.
ត្រឹមត្រូវ៖ ពួកយើងបានជិះម៉ូតូកង់បីពណ៌ក្រហមទៅផ្សារ។
Adjectives
Beautiful flowers
Beautifuls flowers. Adjectives never take an 's' in English. Only the noun becomes plural.
កំហុសទូទៅ៖ "Beautifuls flowers." គុណនាមមិនដែលថែម 's' នៅក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេសទេ។ មានតែនាមទេដែលក្លាយជាពហុវចនៈ។
Correct: She bought three beautiful lotus flowers.
ត្រឹមត្រូវ៖ នាងបានទិញផ្កាឈូកដ៏ស្រស់ស្អាតចំនួនបីទង។
Verbs
He goes
He go. For He, She, and It in the present tense, you must add 's' or 'es' to the action verb.
កំហុសទូទៅ៖ "He go." សម្រាប់ He, She និង It ក្នុងបច្ចុប្បន្នកាល អ្នកត្រូវតែថែម 's' ឬ 'es' ទៅកិរិយាសព្ទសកម្មភាព។
Correct: My brother goes to school at 7:00 AM.
ត្រឹមត្រូវ៖ បងប្រុសរបស់ខ្ញុំទៅសាលារៀននៅម៉ោង ៧:០០ ព្រឹក។
Articles
A dog
I have dog. You cannot leave a singular, countable noun alone. It needs an article like 'a', 'an', or 'the'.
កំហុសទូទៅ៖ "I have dog." អ្នកមិនអាចទុកនាមឯកវចនៈរាប់បានតែឯងនោះទេ។ វាត្រូវការអត្ថបទដូចជា 'a', 'an', ឬ 'the'។
Correct: We saw a dog sleeping near the temple.
ត្រឹមត្រូវ៖ ពួកយើងបានឃើញសត្វឆ្កែមួយក្បាលដេកនៅក្បែរប្រាសាទ។
Prepositions
On Monday
In Monday. Always use the preposition "on" for days of the week, not "in".
កំហុសទូទៅ៖ "In Monday." តែងតែប្រើធ្នាក់ "on" សម្រាប់ថ្ងៃនៃសប្តាហ៍ មិនមែន "in" ទេ។
Correct: The night market is closed on Monday.
ត្រឹមត្រូវ៖ ផ្សាររាត្រីបិទនៅថ្ងៃច័ន្ទ។
