Lesson 1: Common Prefixes & Suffixes (Noun/Adj/Adv)

Welcome to B1 Vocabulary! I am Teacher Sopheak. At this level, you don't just memorize words one by one. Today, I want to show you my favorite trick for learning English: Word Building.

By learning small attachments called prefixes (at the start of a word) and suffixes (at the end), you can take one word you already know and turn it into four new ones!

Core Prefixes & Suffixes

Prefix: Un-

Uncomfortable /ʌnˈkʌmfərtəbl/ មិនមានផាសុកភាព

អារម្មណ៍ថាមិនស្រួលខ្លួន។ (បុព្វបទ Un- មានន័យថា មិន)។

Example: The wooden chairs on the old bus were very uncomfortable.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ កៅអីឈើនៅលើឡានក្រុងចាស់នោះ គឺមិនមានផាសុកភាពទាល់តែសោះ។

Prefix: Re-

Rebuild /ˌriːˈbɪld/ សាងសង់ឡើងវិញ

សាងសង់អ្វីមួយម្តងទៀត។ (បុព្វបទ Re- មានន័យថា ម្តងទៀត / ឡើងវិញ)។

Example: They plan to rebuild the ancient wooden bridge.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ពួកគេមានគម្រោងសាងសង់ស្ពានឈើបុរាណនោះឡើងវិញ។

Noun Suffix: -ness

Happiness /ˈhæpinəs/ សុភមង្គល / ភាពសប្បាយរីករាយ

ស្ថានភាពដែលពោរពេញដោយភាពរីករាយ។ (បច្ច័យ -ness បង្កើតជានាម)។

Example: The Water Festival brought a lot of happiness to the village.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ពិធីបុណ្យអុំទូកបាននាំមកនូវភាពសប្បាយរីករាយជាច្រើនដល់ភូមិ។

Adj Suffix: -ful

Helpful /ˈhɛlpfəl/ ដែលមានប្រយោជន៍ / ចេះជួយយកអាសា

ដែលត្រៀមខ្លួនជានិច្ចក្នុងការជួយ។ (បច្ច័យ -ful បង្កើតជាគុណនាម)។

Example: The tour guide was very helpful when we got lost in the market.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ មគ្គុទ្ទេសក៍ទេសចរណ៍ពិតជាចេះជួយយកអាសាណាស់ នៅពេលដែលពួកយើងវង្វេងផ្លូវក្នុងផ្សារ។

Adv Suffix: -ly

Quickly /ˈkwɪkli/ យ៉ាងលឿន

ក្នុងល្បឿនលឿន។ (បច្ច័យ -ly ភាគច្រើនបង្កើតជាកិរិយាសព្ទវិសេស)។

Example: The tuk-tuk driver navigated quickly through the busy streets.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ អ្នកបើកកង់បីបើកបរយ៉ាងលឿនឆ្លងកាត់ផ្លូវដ៏មមាញឹក។

warning Watch Out: Spelling Changes!

When a word ends in a consonant + Y, change the Y to an I before adding a suffix!
