Lesson 1: Common Prefixes & Suffixes (Noun/Adj/Adv)

Welcome to B1 Vocabulary! In this lesson, we are going to look at one of the best tricks for expanding your English vocabulary quickly: Word Building.

By understanding how to attach small parts called prefixes (at the beginning of a word) and suffixes (at the end of a word), you can easily guess the meaning of hundreds of new words. We will also review a very important spelling rule that often trips up English learners.

By learning small attachments called prefixes (at the start of a word) and suffixes (at the end), you can take one word you already know and turn it into four new ones!

Prefix: Un-

Uncomfortable /ʌnˈkʌmfərtəbl/

Definition: Not feeling comfortable. (Prefix un- means NOT).

Example: The wooden chairs on the old bus were very uncomfortable.

Prefix: Re-

Rebuild /ˌriːˈbɪld/

Definition: To build something again. (Prefix re- means AGAIN).

Example: They plan to rebuild the ancient wooden bridge.

Noun Suffix: -ness

Happiness /ˈhæpinəs/

Definition: The state of being happy. (Suffix -ness makes a NOUN).

Example: The Water Festival brought a lot of happiness to the village.

Adj Suffix: -ful

Helpful /ˈhɛlpfəl/

Definition: Giving or ready to give help. (Suffix -ful makes an ADJECTIVE).

Example: The tour guide was very helpful when we got lost in the market.

Adv Suffix: -ly

Quickly /ˈkwɪkli/

Definition: At a fast speed. (Suffix -ly often makes an ADVERB).

Example: The tuk-tuk driver navigated quickly through the busy streets.

warning Watch Out: Spelling Changes!

When a word ends in a consonant + Y, change the Y to an I before adding a suffix!
