Advanced Fluency: Welcome to C1 level. At this stage, my professional students in Cambodia aren't just trying to be understood; they are learning to sound polished and authoritative. Today we look at Collocations (words that naturally fit together), Registers (adjusting formal vs. informal tone for business), and Euphemisms (using polite terms for sensitive topics in hospitality).

warning Translation Trap
Direct translation fails at this level. In Khmer, you might literally "do" a decision, but in English, the strict collocation is "make a decision." Using the wrong verb instantly marks you as a non-native speaker, even if your grammar is perfect.
ការបកប្រែផ្ទាល់មិនមានប្រសិទ្ធភាពនៅកម្រិតនេះទេ។ ក្នុងភាសាខ្មែរ យើង "ធ្វើការសម្រេចចិត្ត" ប៉ុន្តែក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស ពាក្យដែលត្រូវប្រើတွဲគ្នាគឺ "make a decision" (មិនមែន "do a decision" ទេ)។

Make a decision
To choose a course of action after thinking about the options. (Never "do a decision").
ធ្វើការសម្រេចចិត្ត - ជ្រើសរើសសកម្មភាពបន្ទាប់ពីបានគិតពីជម្រើស។
Example: The hotel management needs to make a decision about the renovation budget.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ អ្នកគ្រប់គ្រងសណ្ឋាគារត្រូវធ្វើការសម្រេចចិត្តអំពីថវិកាជួសជុល។

Deeply rooted
Firmly established and difficult to change. Naturally collocates with 'culture', 'tradition', or 'beliefs'.
ចាក់ឫសយ៉ាងជ្រៅ - បានបង្កើតឡើងយ៉ាងរឹងមាំនិងពិបាកផ្លាស់ប្តូរ (ច្រើនប្រើជាមួយវប្បធម៌ ឬប្រពៃណី)។
Example: Respect for elders is a deeply rooted tradition in Cambodian society.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ការគោរពចាស់ទុំគឺជាប្រពៃណីដែលចាក់ឫសយ៉ាងជ្រៅនៅក្នុងសង្គមខ្មែរ។
Register (Formal)
Commence
A highly formal synonym for "start" or "begin." Used in business itineraries and formal announcements.
ចាប់ផ្តើម - ពាក្យផ្លូវការសម្រាប់ "start" ។ ច្រើនប្រើក្នុងកាលវិភាគការងារ និងសេចក្តីប្រកាសផ្លូវការ។
Example: The guided tour of the Royal Palace will commence at 09:00 hours precisely.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ដំណើរកម្សាន្តនៅព្រះបរមរាជវាំងនឹងចាប់ផ្តើមនៅម៉ោង ០៩:០០ គត់។
Register (Formal)
Require
A formal synonym for "need." Often used in policies, visa applications, and professional requests.
តម្រូវឱ្យមាន / ត្រូវការ - ពាក្យផ្លូវការសម្រាប់ "need" ។ ច្រើនប្រើក្នុងគោលការណ៍ ឬការស្នើសុំទិដ្ឋាការ។
Example: All international visitors require a valid passport to enter the temple complex.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ភ្ញៀវអន្តរជាតិទាំងអស់តម្រូវឱ្យមានលិខិតឆ្លងដែនដែលមានសុពលភាព ដើម្បីចូលទស្សនាបរិវេណប្រាសាទ។
Euphemism
Between jobs
A polite and softer way of saying someone is "unemployed" or "fired."
ទំនេរពីការងារ / កំពុងស្វែងរកការងារថ្មី - ជាវិធីនិយាយដ៏គួរសមជំនួសឱ្យពាក្យថា "អត់ការងារធ្វើ"។
Example: Since the resort closed, Sophea has been between jobs, but she is applying for manager positions.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ តាំងពីរមណីយដ្ឋានបិទទ្វារមក សុភាកំពុងទំនេរពីការងារ ប៉ុន្តែនាងកំពុងដាក់ពាក្យធ្វើជាអ្នកគ្រប់គ្រង។

Pass away
A respectful and sensitive euphemism for "die," crucial for guides explaining history or dealing with guests.
ទទួលមរណភាព / ធ្វើមរណកាល - ពាក្យគួរសមនិងគោរពជំនួសពាក្យ "ស្លាប់" ។ សំខាន់សម្រាប់មគ្គុទ្ទេសក៍ពេលពន្យល់ពីប្រវត្តិសាស្ត្រ។
Example: The great King Jayavarman VII passed away around the year 1218.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ព្រះបាទជ័យវរ្ម័នទី៧ដ៏អស្ចារ្យបានយាងចូលទិវង្គតនៅប្រហែលឆ្នាំ ១២១៨។
