Welcome! When my students in Battambang write their first English emails or stories, they sometimes forget the little marks that give sentences their rhythm. Punctuation tells the reader when to stop, when to ask a question, and what is a name. Let's look at the four basic rules to make your English writing clear and professional.
សូមស្វាគមន៍! សញ្ញាខណ្ឌសញ្ញាប្រាប់អ្នកអានថាពេលណាត្រូវឈប់ ពេលណាត្រូវសួរសំណួរ និងអ្វីជាឈ្មោះ។ តោះមើលវិធានមូលដ្ឋានទាំងបួនដើម្បីធ្វើឱ្យការសរសេរភាសាអង់គ្លេសរបស់អ្នកច្បាស់លាស់។
warning Common Mistake
In Khmer script, we do not use capital letters, and a period (ខណ្ឌ - khan) looks very different. In English, you must start every sentence with a big capital letter and end it with a punctuation mark (like a period . or question mark ?).
នៅក្នុងអក្សរខ្មែរ យើងមិនប្រើអក្សរធំទេ ហើយសញ្ញាខណ្ឌក៏មើលទៅខុសគ្នាដែរ។ នៅក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស អ្នកត្រូវតែចាប់ផ្តើមរាល់ប្រយោគដោយអក្សរធំជានិច្ច ហើយបញ្ចប់វាដោយសញ្ញាខណ្ឌ (ដូចជាចំណុច ឬសញ្ញាសួរ)។

Capital Letter
A large letter used for the first letter of a sentence, names of people, and names of places.
អក្សរធំ - ប្រើសម្រាប់អក្សរទីមួយនៃប្រយោគ ឈ្មោះមនុស្ស និងឈ្មោះទីកន្លែង។
Example: Sophea lives in Battambang.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ សុភា រស់នៅបាត់ដំបង។ (កត់សម្គាល់អក្សរ S និង B ជាអក្សរធំ)
Rule
Period ( . )
A small dot placed at the end of a normal statement or fact. It tells the reader to stop.
សញ្ញាចុច / ចំណុច - ប្រើនៅចុងបញ្ចប់នៃប្រយោគធម្មតា ឬការប្រាប់ព័ត៌មាន។ វាប្រាប់អ្នកអានឱ្យឈប់។
Example: We love eating Kuy Teav for breakfast.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ពួកយើងចូលចិត្តញ៉ាំគុយទាវជាអាហារពេលព្រឹក។

Question Mark ( ? )
Used at the end of a sentence that asks for information.
សញ្ញាសួរ - ប្រើនៅចុងបញ្ចប់នៃប្រយោគដែលសួរសំណួរ។
Example: Excuse me, where is the Central Market?

Comma ( , )
Used to indicate a short pause in a sentence or to separate three or more items in a list.
សញ្ញាក្បៀស - ប្រើដើម្បីបញ្ជាក់ពីការផ្អាកខ្លីនៅក្នុងប្រយោគ ឬដើម្បីបំបែករបស់បី ឬច្រើននៅក្នុងបញ្ជី។
Example: At the market, I bought mangoes, bananas, and rice.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ នៅផ្សារ ខ្ញុំបានទិញផ្លែស្វាយ ចេក និងអង្ករ។
