American Slang

Understanding informal words and street talk.

What is Slang?

When people talk to their friends, they usually don't speak like a textbook. They use slang. Slang is very informal vocabulary that is often used in speaking, but rarely used in formal writing.

If a friend asks you to "hang out," they aren't asking you to hang from a tree! They just want to spend time with you. If someone says a party is "sick," they mean it is awesome, not that the party has a fever.

Understanding slang is the key to sounding natural and understanding movies, music, and real-life conversations.
