The Impact of Sleep Duration on Memory Retention in Adults
Dr. A. Miller, University of Cambridge & Dr. S. Chen, Harvard University
Abstract

Objective: Sleep is essential for cognitive health. This study investigated the hypothesis that obtaining 8 hours of sleep significantly improves short-term memory performance compared to obtaining only 4 hours.

Methodology: A controlled experiment was conducted with 100 adult participants aged 20-30. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups. Group A slept for 8 hours, while Group B was restricted to 4 hours. The following morning, both groups completed a standardized memory recall test consisting of 50 distinct words.

Results: The data revealed a significant difference between the groups. Group A scored an average of 40% higher on the recall test than Group B. Furthermore, participants in Group B reported higher levels of fatigue and lower concentration.

Conclusion: These findings suggest a strong positive correlation between adequate rest and memory retention. Therefore, ensuring 8 hours of sleep is critical for optimal cognitive performance, especially before academic or professional tasks.
