Lesson 35: Legal Terms (Privacy Policy)

⚖️ Legal Lab
Scanning

Terms & Policies

Scanning digital agreements for rules and responsibilities.

Lesson Goal: Learn how to scan complex privacy policies and terms of service to understand what you are agreeing to.

Reading the Fine Print

Every time you download a new app or create an online account, you are asked to accept a "Terms of Service" or "Privacy Policy." Most people just click "Agree" without reading because the text is very long and full of legal words.

To protect yourself, you should use scanning to find the most important details. Don't read every sentence. Instead, scan for headers like "Data Collection" or "Termination." Look specifically for action verbs like opt-out or consent to see what control you have over your own information.

Go to the next tab to learn the legal vocabulary, then practice scanning a real Policy Update modal in the Practice tab!
