Bias & Critical Thinking
Distinguishing Fact from Opinion in writing.
Fact vs. Fiction
When you read the news or look at product reviews online, you are rarely getting a perfect, 100% true story. Authors use specific words to make you feel a certain way.
A Fact is an objective statement. It usually involves numbers, dates, or events that anyone can verify. (Example: "The phone costs $800.")
An Opinion or a Bias uses emotional language, adjectives, or exaggerations to persuade the reader. (Example: "The phone is ridiculously expensive!")
