"On a normal weekday, I usually wake up3 at 6:00 AM, but I don't get up4 until 6:15! First, I have breakfast5, then I go to school6. I get home7 around 5:00 PM and help my mother cook dinner8. In my free time, I like to listen to music9 and read books10. On the weekend, I often hang out with my friends11."

record_voice_over Pronunciation Focus: Phrasal Verbs

Some of these phrases are "phrasal verbs" (a verb + a small word like up, out, on). For these, the stress is usually on the second word.

  • It's not "WAKE up," it's "wake UP."
  • It's not "GET up," it's "get UP."
  • It's not "HANG out," it's "hang OUT."

Also, we link the sounds together. "Get up" sounds like one word: "getup". Listen to the audio guide to hear this natural pronunciation.

lightbulb Using Adverbs of Frequency

To make your sentences better, add an adverb to say how often you do something. The adverb usually goes before the main verb phrase.

  • I always wake up at 6:00 AM. (100% of the time)
  • I usually have rice for breakfast. (Maybe 80%)
  • I often watch movies on Saturday. (Maybe 60%)
  • I sometimes play football. (Maybe 30%)
